The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
