Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
