The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors will gain the right to challenge specific calls from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
